A key is used to open or close a door, a safe, or can unlock a means of transportation. A skate key was used to tighten a pair of skates into position on our feet. Skates were our mode of transportation, that could, if we had enough leg strength, carry us around the block, around the neighborhood or around the world. My sister cherished her first skate key and in her adulthood, each time she held it the metal key unlocked her childhood memories and with those old thoughts she spoke as the prophet and storyteller of the life we shared as children and young adults. In 1996 when she made her transition, but like a runner handing a baton, the honor of caring for this small touchstone, her skate key passed to me.
In my up coming book, Sassafras Tea and Cinnamon Toast--A life without ruffles, I chronicle our unique and quirky family story, living in an oil rich town outside of the San Francisco bay, and through the stories of our neighborhood eternal truths are unlocked..."we are more alike than we are different."
